SHEBOYGAN, Wis. – For eight holes Matt Jones didn’t look like a player whose best finish in a major is a tie for 30th at last month’s Open Championship.

The Australian opened his round the way he finished Round 2, playing his first eight holes in 2 under par to maintain his lead at the PGA Championship. But that’s when things took a bad turn when his drive at No. 9 sailed into a corporate tent left of the fairway.

Jones said he “double crossed” his tee shot at the ninth and considered taking a drop but instead played his second from the porch. He missed the green and made his first bogey in 35 holes.

“Actually I was happy where the ball was,” Jones said. “The spot where I had to have gone [and dropped] would have been much harder. And I hit a very good [second] shot, I picked the wrong line.”

Jones recovered with birdies at Nos. 11 and 14, but his day ultimately unraveled with a bogey at the 15th hole and he played his last four holes in 4 over par for a 73 that left him tied for sixth place at 10 under par.

“I'm still in it. I'm definitely not out of it,” said Jones, who trails front-runner Jason Day by five strokes. “I have to shoot a very good round tomorrow.”
