Each week on GolfChannel.com, we’ll take a detailed look at the players who pounded the farthest and fastest drives on the PGA Tour. Here are the five most important distance-related stats from the WGC-Cadillac Championship:
Longest drive: Gary Woodland, 382 yards
The new Doral certainly rewards longer hitters, as both the names below can attest. Woodland's length earned him a T-23 at the Blue Monster, his highest finish on Tour in a month. For reference, Woodland averages 307.6 yards off the tee, eighth on Tour this season.
Recent leaders: Sergio Garcia, 403 yards (Honda Classic); Jordan Spieth, 382 yards (Northern Trust Open)
Driving distance: Dustin Johnson, 328.3 yards
Our champion this week, who became just the eighth man to win multiple WGC titles, Johnson (317.3) was leading the Tour for two weeks in average distance and now trails only Cal's Brandon Hagy (321.5), who has played three events this season.
Recent leaders: Patrick Rodgers, 303 yards (Honda Classic); Dustin Johnson, 314.9 yards (Northern Trust Open)
Carry distance: Dustin Johnson, 319.6, yards
No drive was more illustrative of Johnson's advantage than his blast on the 18th hole. Rather than play it safe with a one-shot lead and aim down the right side of the fairway, Johnson opted to fly his tee shot over the water down the left - at least a 300-yard carry. He would find the fairway, make par, and win the tournament. For the record, Johnson now leads the Tour in carry distance at 309.8 yards.
Recent leaders: Patrick Rodgers, 292.8 yards (Honda Classic); Bubba Watson, 310.0 yards (Northern Trust Open)
Clubhead speed: Bubba Watson, 123.85 mph
Watson appeared as if he was on his way to victory through nine holes on Sunday, before a string of back-nine bogeys torpedoed his chances.
Recent leaders: Brooks Koepka, 122.85 (Honda Classic); Tony Finau, 126.17 (Northern Trust Open)
Ball speed: Bubba Watson, 184.65 mph
Just how much does Doral favor the longer hitters? Only 11 players finished on the right side of par at Doral, but Johnson, Watson and J.B. Holmes were a combined 26 under.
Recent leaders: Brooks Koepka, 179.87 (Honda Classic); Tony Finau, 184.06 (Northern Trust Open)
