Kuchar stumbles late in bid for second Memorial title

DUBLIN, Ohio – Matt Kuchar shared the lead for most of the final round at the Memorial, but an unfortunate break in a fairway bunker prevented him from winning his second trophy at Muirfield Village.

Kuchar returned from a 90-minute rain delay facing a 148-yard second shot from a fairway bunker at the par-4 13th. He caught it thin and it led to a double bogey. He finished two strokes out of a playoff.

"To come out after the break and turn that into a double was really disheartening," Kuchar said. "Kind of tough to come back. Conditions played really hard when I came back out."

The good news for Kuchar is trending well for the U.S. Open as he looks to win his first major title. He's recorded six top-10s in his last eight starts, and three of those have been top-4 finishes. But after shooting 3 over par on the back nine, Kuchar was clearly frustrated by another missed opportunity.

"At some point, the nice finishes don't mean too much," he said. "You really look to put your name inside the clubhouse on the winner's trophy. And that's where I feel like I stand right now with my game, it's nice to finish fourth place, but that's not what I showed up here to do."
