Martin taking positives away from close Players finish

PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. – Ben Martin’s late, bold run came up agonizingly short Sunday at The Players Championship.

With birdies at the 15th, 16th and 17th holes, Martin moved into a tie for the lead and into the thick of the high drama playing out at the TPC Sawgrass Stadium Course.

Needing a par at the last to get into a playoff in his first appearance at The Players, Martin pushed his drive right and into trouble, forcing him to punch his way back into the fairway. His hopes were dashed, however, after he hit wedge to 15 feet and watched his putt for par drift right.

“It was a good experience,” Martin said. “Being in the hunt on Sunday, and in one of the best fields in the world, one of the best tournaments we play all year . . . So, I won't take any negatives away, only positives.”

Martin closed with a 70 and tied for fourth.

“I gave myself a chance,” he said.
