PARAMUS, N.J. – Graeme McDowell won’t play next week’s Deutsche Bank Championship, but he does have a worthy excuse.
McDowell’s wife, Kristin, is scheduled to have a baby on Monday morning.
“We planned it for the Monday of Deutsche Bank to give myself as much breathing room to possibly play Boston,” he explained. “Mathematically, I knew I was kind of guaranteed to play Colorado (the BMW Championship). My caddie has been telling me all year, ‘You’re not going to want to go to Boston.’ So I’ve decided to give myself the weekend off and just be with the family. Nice to be able to plan it that way.”
McDowell, who is not only trying to advance in the FedEx Cup but also retain his status as an automatic qualifier for the European Ryder Cup team, posted a final-round 72 to finish T-38 at The Barclays.
“I had a lot on my mind this week. Good stuff. I have to be the first to admit that mentally I was really ready for this tournament, but I dragged myself up for it. I got myself in good position after Friday, but disappointed in the weekend’s performance.”
