RIO DE JANEIRO – Justin Rose didn’t just win golf’s gold medal for Great Britain on Sunday, he won one of five gold medals for Team GB on the entire day.
Great Britain (38) is third in the medal count behind the U.S. (69) and China (45).
“Five gold medals is something that I’m very, very proud of,” Rose said Monday.
Andy Murray took home gold in tennis hours after Rose’s victory. Murray saw Rose finish the last hole to win before he went out for his scheduled match. Rose saw the last two games of Murray’s victory.
“In the end you almost couldn’t tell who had won and who had lost,” Rose said about Murray’s victory over Argentina’s Juan Martin del Potro. “They both left everything out on the court. That was incredible.”
Murray and Rose both walked in the Opening Ceremony for Great Britain over a week ago, and on the bus ride back they shared a row of seats and were able to share a few moments together.
“It’s quite cool to fast forward 10 days and to see both of us having Olympic gold has been one of the takeaways of the week for me,” Rose said.
