PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. – A recent PGA Tour player poll on Golf.com ranked TPC Sawgrass, home of The Players, as the fourth-worst course on the circuit, just behind the likes of Torrey Pines North, Las Colinas and Trump Puerto Rico.
The Stadium Course may have received 5 percent of the vote, but don’t expect Chris Stroud to agree with that assessment.
“I cannot believe that,” Stroud said on Friday. “It’s one of the best tests of golf there is. How can they say that?
“I’ve been out here a long time, I think I know what a good golf course is and I think it’s incredibly great. It rewards great ballstriking. When they say that they probably think there’s too much risk for very little reward.”
It’s little surprise Stroud would have a different take on the Stadium Course. Following an opening-round 70, he scaled the leaderboard with a 67 on Friday and was tied for fourth when he completed his round.
“This is just like home for me, just like Houston,” said Stroud, who has two top-15 finishes at The Players. “Tree-lined, Bermuda [grass] greens, small targets. I’m comfortable on the greens. This course is one of my favorites, for sure.”
