GLENEAGLES, Scotland – After combining to earn a full point for the U.S. in their morning fourball match, rookies Jordan Spieth and Patrick Reed were benched by captain Tom Watson for the afternoon foursomes session.
Following a 5-and-4 victory over Ian Poulter and Stephen Gallacher, the young American duo suggested in a post-round interview that they would love to be paired for another match. Instead, they’ll be watching as the captain re-pairs two of the morning tandems and inserts all four players who hadn’t yet played.
In the opening match of the alternate-shot format, Jim Furyk and Matt Kuchar – two top-10 players who each sat during the morning session – will face the duo of Lee Westwood and Jamie Donaldson, each of whom were also rested.
In the second match, the other U.S. team that didn’t play earlier, Zach Johnson and Hunter Mahan, will face off against Henrik Stenson and Justin Rose, who opened the scoring with a 5-and-4 victory in fourballs.
In the third match, Rickie Fowler and Jimmy Walker will again play together, up against the formidable duo of Rory McIlroy and Sergio Garcia.
And in the final match of the afternoon, Phil Mickelson and Keegan Bradley remain paired together and will play Graeme McDowell and Victor Dubuisson.
