Jimmy Walker is reaping the rewards of a home game through two rounds of the Valero Texas Open.

A resident of nearby Boerne, Texas, Walker carded a 5-under 67 Friday at TPC San Antonio to move to the top of the leaderboard. At 6 under, he holds a one-shot advantage over Charley Hoffman and Aaron Baddeley and leads by two over Jordan Spieth and Kevin Na heading into the weekend.

"This place is notoriously pretty tough," Walker said. "Any time you can get in the 60s on this golf course, it's a bonus."

The key to Walker's round was on the greens, as he needed only 27 putts and his strokes gained putting total was +3.73 for the day. He made seven putts over 8 feet in length and capped his round with three birdies across his final four holes to take overtake Hoffman atop the standings.

"Just kind of kept trying to build on each hole there at the end," he said.

The round continued an impressive start to the season for Walker, who lost in a playoff at the Hyundai Tournament of Champions in January and then cruised to victory at the Sony Open the following week. He also tied for seventh at the Farmers Insurance Open and leads the FedEx Cup standings thanks to five top-25 finishes in nine starts this season.

Walker benefits from sleeping in his own bed each night this week, and he now heads into the weekend in prime position at an event where he tied for third in 2010 and finished T-16 last year. A win would be his fifth since October 2013, which would be the most of any player across that span.

"Should be a lot of support from friends and family. I think it's going to be fun," he said. "I look forward to the challenge, and look forward to having a chance. It's nice to be right there at the top and have a chance. That's what you're out here trying to do."
