Tiger Woods' second round at the Valspar Championship began with a "Fore," but also a 4. Woods, following a roller-coaster opening round, had an eventful par on his first hole Friday, the par-4 10th.
Following a par at the par-5 11th, Woods stuffed his approach shot on the par-4 12th. The birdie got him to 2 under par for the tournament and two off the lead.
He then hit another great iron into the green at the par-3 13th, converted the 6-footer for birdie and got to 3 under ... just one back.
Woods parred his final five holes on his opening nine and made the turn in 2-under 33. At 3 under, overall, he was one shot off the lead.
He continued his march up the leaderboard with a birdie at the par-4 second. At 4 under, he was tied at the top with Jimmy Walker and Corey Conners.
Woods birdied the par-5 fifth to take sole possession of the lead and remained there with this clutch par save at the par-4 seventh.
After crushing a drive at the par-4 ninth, his final hole of the day, Woods hit his wedge approach shot wide right. He pitched to 8 feet but was unable to convert the save. The bogey, his lone one of the round, gave him a 3-under 68. At 4 under par, overall, he was tied for the lead at the conclusion of his round.
