Weekley shoots 8-under 64 at Zurich Classic

Boo Weekley is right in his sweet spot on the PGA Tour schedule.

All three of his wins have come in a six-week span (April 15-May 26), and so it was little surprise to see him atop the early leaderboard Thursday at the Zurich Classic.

Taking advantage of a rain-softened course and virtually no wind, Weekley made seven birdies and an eagle during an opening-round 64 at TPC Louisiana.

It was his best start of the season – by five shots. The last time he shot 64 in an opening round was the 2012 McGladrey Classic.

Weekley said that he switched out the shafts in his irons before Wednesday’s pro-am and saw instant results.

“I just felt like I had a lot of momentum going in,” he told reporters. “I played good on Wednesday in a practice round. It’s just kind of carried over and I hope it stays with me. I need it.”

Weekley has three top 15s in seven career starts in this event, most recently a T-6 in 2013, when he opened with 65.

Apparently, he plays his best golf in the spring: He is a two-time winner at the RBC Heritage (2007, ’08) and also won at Colonial in 2013.

Last week in Hilton Head, Weekley broke par only once en route to a T-75 finish, which was still enough to snap a streak of three consecutive missed cuts.
