Westwood nearing Faldo's Ryder Cup points record

CHASKA, Minn. – The team takes precedence this week, of course, but Lee Westwood has the opportunity to make some history individually.

Westwood, who has earned 23 points in nine Ryder Cup appearances, has a chance to break Nick Faldo’s all-time record of 25. The Englishman has an overall record of 20-15-6.

“I’d be lying if I didn’t say I wanted to get past Nick’s record,” Westwood said Thursday, “because anybody involved in sport wants to break records. That’s what drives us all on, to be able to say you’re the best at anything.

“But if you give me a choice of not winning any points and the Europeans winning the Ryder Cup, then that would definitely come first before getting in front of Nick’s record or getting near it. It’s all about the team this week.”

Now 43, Westwood required a captain’s pick to make his 10th Ryder Cup.

Phil Mickelson is playing in his 11th Ryder Cup on the American side, but he has earned only 19 points in his career while compiling a 16-19-6 record.
