A year ago at St Andrews, all eyes were on Jordan Spieth and his bid to capture the Grand Slam. But it was good buddy Zach Johnson who emerged victorious, winning a four-hole aggregate playoff for his second career major title. Johnson hit all but one fairway en route to a final-round 66, and 55 of 64 fairways (86 percent) for the week to add the Claret Jug to the green jacket he won in 2007.

How is Johnson able to drive it so straight off the tee, even in the windiest of conditions? No one knows better than his long-time swing coach Mike Bender, who shares some of Zach’s keys to splitting fairways in the July issue of Golf Channel Academy Magazine. The monthly all-instruction digital publication is downloadable for FREE on the App Store or Google Play Store, or by visiting

The July issue also features a cover story from Golf Channel Academy lead coach and Scotland native Kenny Nairn on how to play four of the most common shots in links golf. Learn how to escape from a super-deep greenside bunker, hit a bump-and-run with your hybrid, sting it off the tee and more. The Open-themed issue also includes a column from Golf Channel "School of Golf" host Martin Hall on the legend of the links, five-time Open champion Tom Watson, and some tips on how to keep a great round going from performance experts Lynn Marriott and Pia Nilsson.
