THE ANNIKA WATCH - Day 2
Score: Even-par 144 through two rounds. Sorenstam shot her second consecutive 72, She finished 36 holes 10 off the lead, but did manage to make the cut.
Key to the round: Three consecutive birdies beginning at the ninth hole. Sorenstam had fallen to 2 over par for the tournament and into a tie for 86th place before she reeled off a trio of birdies to get back into red numbers. A bogey at 17, however, left her sweating a little.
Breakdown: Sorenstam has to find a way to make birdies. Major championships are normally about staying away from big numbers, but with the deficit she now faces, birdies are a must -- and they must come in bunches.
In her words: Id say today was like yesterday. I play 15 good holes and then again I leave a few shots out there. I just cant do that, not in this type of championship. Its costing me too much and then I always have to do catchup and Ive not been able to do that.
THE ANNIKA WATCH - Day 1
Score: Even-par 72, seven shots behind first-round leader Juli Inkster.
Key to the round: Sorenstam was 3 over par after six holes but battled back to shoot even-par with birdies on 9, 14 and 15.
Breakdown: Although she was looking forward to her final major championship ' telling GOLF CHANNELs Mike Ritz Wednesday that she thought she should be in contention Sunday ' Sorenstam could not find a way to get the ball in the hole. An even-par 72 would be a fantastic opening round for the men two weeks ago at the Open Championship at Birkdale, but that score is seven shots behind veteran Inkster at Sunningdate for the Womens British Open. Sorenstam is not out of the mix yet ' seven shots is not insurmountable ' but it puts more pressure on her to produce a spectacular second round. You cant get seven shots down to Inkster ' a seven-time major championship winner ' heading into the weekend and expect a good chance at victory.
In her words: I don't really know what to do. Ive never made so many bogeys as these last three months and its driving me crazy. Its so disappointing that I cant post something low. It seems like I cant play 18 holes.
