Day 2 pairings and prognostications

Presidents Cup

SAN FRANCISCO – Day  2 fourball pairings and prognostications from senior writers Rex Hoggard and Randall Mell, who are at Harding Park for the Presidents Cup.

All times are Eastern:

1:55 p.m. – Retief Goosen-Adam Scott (INT) vs. Phil Mickelson-Justin Leonard (USA)

Rex: Leonard rebounds from his miscue at the 18th on Thursday and the American duo edges out a close victory early. U.S. 1 up.

Randall: Mickelson, with a hot putter, is radiating with confidence, enough to spare for Leonard, who will be wanting to redeem himself for that short miss at the 18th that cost the Americans a half point. U.S. 1 up.

2:07 p.m. – Ernie Els-Mike Weir (INT) vs. Jim Furyk-Anthony Kim (USA)

Rex: On Thursday Weir and Tim Clark fail to make a birdie, but the Canadian and Els are much better during Day 2’s freewheeling format. Internationals 2 and 1.

Randall: Kim caught fire at the end of Thursday’s foursomes, momentum that will make this birdie machine tough to beat with Furyk in this format. U.S. 1 up.

2:19 p.m. – Ryo Ishikawa-Y.E. Yang (INT) vs. Kenny Perry-Sean O’Hair (USA)

Rex: O’Hair looked nervous and overwhelmed on Thursday, but with Perry there to ease his nerves the birdie-making tandem dismantle Harding Park and the Asian duo. U.S. 3 and 2.

Randall: Asian combo gives the Far East more reason to be proud. Ishikawa should be looser in this format. Internationals 1 up.

2:31 p.m. – Vijay Singh-Tim Clark (INT) vs. Lucas Glover-Stewart Cink (USA)

Rex: Cink and Glover continue to struggle in what has the makings of an ugly match. Neither team brings their best stuff and it’s a no decision. Halve.

Randall: Reigning major championship winners can’t lose two in a row? Can they? U.S. 1 up.

2:43 p.m. – Robert Allenby-Camilo Villegas (INT) vs. Zach Johnson-Hunter Mahan (USA)

Rex: Mahan’s ballstriking and Johnson’s putting are too much for even a resurgent Allenby and the Americans secure a crucial flag late in the day. U.S. 1 up.

Randall: Allenby’s highly motivated by the lack of respect he’s feeling, and to prove he can putt. Internationals 2 and 1.

2:55 p.m. – Geoff Ogilvy-Angel Cabrera (INT) vs. Steve Stricker-Tiger Woods (USA)

Rex: New partner for Ogilvy, same result. Woods said he took just four putts on Day 1 thanks to Stricker’s prolific play on the greens. He may take less on Friday. U.S. 3 and 2.

Randall: A dynamite pairing on both sides, should be lots of fireworks, but this is our upset special. Internationals 1 up.

Day 2 prediction results:

Rex: U.S. 4.5 - Internationals 1.5; Overall: U.S. 8 - Internationals 4

Randall: U.S. 3 - Internationals 3; Overall: U.S. 6.5 - Internationals 5.5
