NC Snags First at Birkdale Collegiate

College CentralHUNTERSVILLE, N.C. -- The University of North Carolina men's golf team snagged a first-place finish at the Birkdale Collegiate Classic finishing with a 3-under-par, two-day total of 573. The Tar Heels fired a 7-under 281 in the final round after posting a 292 in the first round. Virginia Tech followed seven strokes behind with a 4-over-par score of 580.
Senior Ramon Bescansa captured his first collegiate win after being tied for second after the first round of play. Bescansa ended the two-day competition at 7-under 137 after carding rounds of 69-68. Geoffrey Harris of Old Dominion lost his two-stroke lead and ended the tournament one stroke behind Bescansa. Junior Dustin Bray tied for fifth place with a 1-under-par 143 total score after rounds of 74-69.
Carolina improved their team score by 11 strokes in the final round of play. Freshman Kevin Silva ended with a 1-over-par score of 145 and tied for 10th place with rounds of 74-71. Junior Richard Treis and freshman Fernando Figueroa both tied for 42 with a score of 152.
The Birkdale Collegiate Classic was played at the Birkdale Golf Course, a 7,013-yard, par-72 layout. The second round of the tournament was suspended due to weather. The final scores respresent the first and third rounds of play.
