The threesome won the first three of four special tournaments created to allow GOLF CHANNEL Amateur Tour members to compete for the chance of a lifetime ' a private audition for the GOLF CHANNELs reality series, The Big Break. In the shows eighth season, a PGA TOUR exemption will be on the line.
The four overall low gross winners of these Big Break Qualifier tournaments receive an all-expense paid trip to Orlando, Fla., where they are literally bumped to the front of the line in the audition process. They will get the same chance to impress the shows producers as other golfers who survived an intensive national search. Those chosen will form the cast of The Big Break 8.
The first qualifier was held at The Heritage Golf Club just north of Atlanta. Palmer Flight Tour member Caporale carded a two-day total of 144 (71-73) to win the low gross honors by a single stroke over first round leader Andrew Hewitt of Moore, SC.
Caporales opening round included an eagle on the par-5 8th hole. He finished the tournament with nine birdies and eight bogeys in addition to his eagle.
The second qualifier took place at LPGA International in Daytona Beach, Fla. Brooks started the event with a solid even par on the Arthur Hills designed Legends course that included 3 birdies. Round two was on the links-styled Champions course, where Brooks salvaged a 3-over par after a costly double bogey on the 15th hole.
Brooks two day total of 147 was four shots better than his nearest challenger, Kevin Shores of Orlando.
The third qualifier was held at Redstone Golf Club, home of the Shell Houston Open. In windy and cold conditions Chase Barnes posted the low score in the first round. On day two, in perfect conditions, Barnes continued his stellar play by posting his second consecutive low round to take home the Big Break VIII qualifying title.
Barnes' two day total of 151 was six shot lower than his nearest challenger, Frank Wallace.
The final Big Break Qualifier event at Whisper Creek Golf Club in Huntley, Illinois was postponed due to snow. It will now take place May 5th and 6th when one final GOLF CHANNEL Amateur Tour member will join the existing trio of winners by earning a final audition.
