Barnes Named SGA Amateur of Month

BIRMINGHAM, Ala - University of Arizona senior Ricky Barnes has been named National Amateur of the Month for April by the Southern Golf Association following his stalwart play at the Masters.
Barnes upstaged playing partner Tiger Woods in the first two rounds of the Masters and remained high on the leaderboard deep into the third round before completing the tournament tied for 21st. No amateur has finished higher in the Masters in the past 15 years.
Earlier in the month, Barnes, from Stockton, Cal., made a clutch birdie on the final hole to help give his UA team a narrow victory in the National Invitational Tournament. Barnes also had been impressive in another PGA Tour event, finishing 18th in the Tucson Chrysler Classic.
Honorable mention for April performances went to University of Florida freshman Brett Stegmaier and Oglethorpe University junior Trent Erb.
The SGA stages the 100-year-old Southern Amateur, scheduled this year at The
Homestead in Hot Springs, Virginia.
