European Hopefuls to Battle in Wales

The European Tour heads into Wales this week, as players are digging in and pulling out all the stops in the last few remaining weeks before the Ryder Cup.
This weeks event, the Celtic Manor Resort Wales Open, boasts a total purse of 1,000,000 pounds, up some 25 percent from last year. It should provide much-needed Ryder Cup points for several players in the field.
Included on that list is Ian Woosnam, who at No. 16 on the standings, is coming off a frustrating event at last weeks Scandinavian Masters, when his caddie failed to show up for the final round.
Following the little Welshmans debacle in the Open Championship ' when that same caddie did not count the clubs in his bag and therefore caused a two-stroke penalty ' Woosnam will have someone new on the bag this week.
Also in the running for the team are Ian Poulter (No. 12), Andrew Coltart (No. 13) and Phillip Price (No. 9). They will all tee it up this week on Celtic Manors Wentwood Hills course.
So too will Sam Torrance. And you can bet that the European captain will have his eyes peeled for those coming into top form.
The Celtic Manor Resort Wales Open is in just its second year on the tour. Last year it was won by Steen Tinning, who shot 15-under-par 273 to beat David Howell.
