Georgia On Their Minds

The Champions Tour plays its second inaugural event in three weeks as the 50-and-over set travels to Columbus, Ga. for the Columbus Southern Open.
The 6,418-yard, par-70 Green Island Country Club will play host to the $1.5 million event.
Two weeks ago, Hale Irwin won the first-ever Kinkos Classic of Austin. It was the first time in eight years that the tour had visited Austin, Texas, which was the host city for the Liberty Mutual Legends of Golf from 1978 to 1994. And this week, theyll debut in another event that has tour history.
Green Island hosted 21 Southern Opens, from 1970 through 1990, on the PGA Tour. Its list of winners included Champions Tour members Hubert Green (1975, 84), Gary Player (1973), J.C. Snead (1981) and DeWitt Weaver (1972).
Georgia residents Allen Doyle and Larry Nelson could use a little home state boost. Doyle, who lives less than an hour away in La Grange, is still in search of his first victory since his Player of the Year campaign in 2001. Nelson, who lives about 100 miles away in Marietta, won four times in 01, but hasnt won since.
This is the middle of three first-time events on the tours 2003 calendar. The inaugural Greater Hickory Classic at Rock Barn will be played July 4-6 in Conover N.C.
