Love Has History at The Heritage

Davis Love III has a bitter taste in his mouth, thanks to a disappointing tie for 15th in last weeks Masters Tournament. But a trip to Hilton Head, S.C., might be what he needs to wash it away.
Love is a four-time winner at Harbour Town Golf Links, site of this weeks The MCI Heritage presented by Hilton Head Island.
He first donned the plaid jacket in 1987. He also won in 1991 and 92, and yet again in 98. Love didnt compete in the 87 Masters, but he did in his three other victorious years at Hilton Head ' and in none of those did he ever finish better than 25th at Augusta.
Despite his poor showing in the year's first major, Love is having a break-through season, at the age of 39 ' which he turned Sunday. He has recorded wins at Pebble Beach and at The Players Championship.
Loves showing at Sawgrass ' where he shot a flawless Sunday 64 in adverse conditions ' was one of the most impressive in his 18-year PGA Tour career, and provided him with renewed confidence.
Sam Snead holds the tour record for most wins in a single event: eight in the Greater Greensboro Classic. Four players have won the same tournament six times, while 12 players have won the same event on five occasions.
The Heritage extends itself to multiple winners. In addition to Love, Hale Irwin won it three times (1971, 73, 94), while Johnny Miller (72, 74), Hubert Green (76, 78), Tom Watson (79, 82), Fuzzy Zoeller (83, 86) and Payne Stewart (89, 90) have won it twice.
Justin Leonard will try and join Stewart and Love as the only players to successfully defend their titles.
Leonard edged Heath Slocum to capture this tournament a year ago. He already has one victory under his belt this season, having defeated Love in The Honda Classic.
The purse has been upped to $4.5 million, with $810,000 going to the winner ' which, incidentally, is only $9,000 less than what Love has made in each of his four victories combined.
