Nelson Captures Win No 3 in Boston

Larry Nelson captured his third Senior Tour victory of the season by firing a final-round 6-under-par 66 at the FleetBoston Classic.
Nelson's 13-under-par total was good enough for a four-shot win over Jim Thorpe, who closed in 5-under-par 67. Leading 2000 money earner, Bruce Fleisher, tied for 3rd with Allen Doyle and Chi Chi Rodriguez. Hale Irwin, currently second in seasonal earnings, finished in 6th place, alongside Leonard Thompson.
Nelson began the day one shot back of Kermit Zarley, but managed to wrangle a one-stroke advantage through nine holes. That's when Zarley came unraveled. Seeking his first Tour win since 1994, Zarley carded two birdies, three bogeys and a double-bogey for an inward half of 39. He shot 75 on the day to finish tied for 11th at 5-under.
While Zarley faltered on the back nine, Nelson flourished with a 4-under 32. Those four strokes proved to be the difference in the final outcome.
'I knew somebody would shoot low today,' Nelson said. 'It was the only way to break out of the pack, or we would have had an 11-way playoff.
'At out age, all of them (wins) are great. You never know when it's going to be your last win.'
Nelson collected a first-place check of $195,000. He remains in third place on the 2000 money list.
