Senior Camilo Villegas fired a 5-under 67 in leading the No. 1 Florida mens golf team to an 11-under team round as well as the lead after the first round in the Southern Highlands Collegiate at Southern Highlands Golf Club on Friday.
The Gators round of 277 ties for the 12th best by par in school history and gave them a two-shot cushion over Clemson and Arizona State entering the second round at the par 72, 7,440-yard course.
'We had a nice day today, but even more important than leading was that we played well because we didnt when we came here last year,' Florida coach Buddy Alexander said. 'This is a big tournament for us because were seeing schools from the west that we dont see very often. This was an important round for us and hopefully well continue to play well the next two days.'
Villegas tied his season-best round with a 67, which included five birdies and one eagle on the day.
Sophomore Brett Stegmaier was just one shot back of Villegas in a tie for fifth at 68 after carding four birdies during the afternoon.
Sophomores Ryan Cochran and Matt Every fell next in line in a tie for 18th at 71 (-1).
Freshman Jessie Mudd (Louisville, Ky.) rounded out the Gators after carding a 5-over 77 to stand in a tie for 61st.
