The team of Park/Ward birdied the closing par-4 18th to defeat Inkster and Pepper 1-up in the LPGA division of this better-ball team match play-formatted event.
The winning hole came just in time for Park and Ward, as well, as Inkster and Pepper had just rallied back from a 2-down deficit with a birdie at the 16th and a par No. 17.
The loss was unprecedented for Inkster and Pepper, who were chasing an unbelievable fifth straight title for their division at the Monarch Beach Golf Links in Dana Point, Calif.
As for Park and Ward, they will now square off against Lorie Kane and Janice Moodie, after the duo beat the strong team of Karrie Webb and Kelly Robbins 2-up on Saturday to advance to the finals.
The womens matches proved to be the only competitive golf on Day 1, as in the PGA and Senior PGA Tour divisions, routes seemed to be the rule of the day.
Defending PGA Tour champs Tom Lehman and Duffy Waldorf were strong all the way around Monarch on Saturday, as they handed Joe Durant and Skip Kendall an 8-and-6 beating.
They will now play 2000 champions Fred Couples and Mark Calcavecchia, following the duos defeat of David Toms and Steve Flesch 5-and-4 in the opening round.
In the Senior division, Tom Watson and Andy North handed a 5-and-3 loss to Arnold Palmer and Bruce Fleisher. Watson won last year playing with Jack Nicklaus, but North filled in for the Golden Bear when he pulled out of the event with back problems.
They will compete for the Senior title on Sunday against a pair of unconventional swingers in Allen Doyle and Dana Quigley. Doyle and Quigley beat Tom Kite and Gary McCord 5-and-4 on Saturday to advance into the finals.
