PGA Tour Inagurates Payne Stewart Award

The First Annual Payne Stewart Award will be given at The Tour Championship at Atlanta, Ga., it was announced on the anniversary of his death Wednesday.
Nominations were based on a player sharing Stewart's respect for the traditions of the game, his commitment to uphold the game's charitable support and his professional and meticulous presentation of himself and the sport through his dress and conduct.
A $300,000 grant presented by Southern Company will accompany the award, with the money going to a Stewart family charity, a First Tee facility in Missouri and a charity of the winner's choice.
Flags flew at half-mast at the National Car Rental Golf Classic at Walt Disney World Resort in Orlando and at the PGA Tour headquarters in Ponte Vedra, Fla. Stewart died Oct. 25, 1999, in an airplane accident.
