Semple Thompson Captures Third Straight

USGAFollowing a moment of silence in the wake of one of the most horrendous catastrophies in the history of the United States, Carol Semple Thompson of Sewickley, Penn. beat Anne Carr 2-up to win the 40th USGA Senior Womens Amateur Championship.
The victory marks Semple Thompsons third in a row at this event, and her sixth USGA National title.
It also comes just two days removed from the deadly terrorist bombings in New York City and Washington, D.C., after the remaining golfers decided to continue playing.
In addition to winning this particular event in 99 and 00, Semple Thompson has also won the 73 Womens Amateur and the 90 and 97 Womens Mid-Amateur.
On Thursdsay, she continued to show off her fine championship skills that she had displayed all week in her home state of Pennsylvania.
A/S through 16 holes at the Allegheny Country Club, Semple Thompson made par at the par-4 17th, while Carr ' who hails from Renton, Wash. ' slipped with a bogey.
The hole put Semple Thompson 1-up, and following a final birdie at the short par-5 17th, she successfully moved one step closer to Carolyn Cudones record of five consecutive victories from 68 to 72.
Interestingly, Semple Thompsons 1990 win at the Mid-Amateur came at this same Allegheny Country Club, giving the golfer two national titles in her hometown.
Carr was competing in just her first USGA Senior Womens Amateur.
The USGA Senior Womens Amateur is one of 13 championships conducted by the United States Golf Association. Open to non-professional women over 50 years of age, it is in its 40th season.
