Tough to Double Up On Champions

04 FedEx KinkoLast year, a repeat winner didnt pop up on the Champions Tour until the U.S. Senior Open, a run of 16 tournaments. This year, not until Bruce Fleisher won for the second time at Brunos Memorial Classic last week - 10 tournaments deep into the schedule - did someone repeat.
This week the tour goes for two repeaters in a row as the field tees off Friday at the FedEx Kinkos Classic in Austin, Texas (TGC, Fri. - Sun. 5-7:30 PM ET).
Hale Irwin is the defending champion, and he has already won once this year. A successful defense of his crown would be his second win of the year, too.
Last year was the same type thing ' there are just a lot of guys out here with a lot of capability to win a tournament, said Tom Kite, who has been shut out this year.
When you see someone start to dominate, like Hale and Gil (Morgan) have on our tour, then everyone just steps up to it. Guys are not going to let anyone get too far away anymore, I dont believe, without doing something about it.
You see more and more guys start to step into the (workout) trailers, trying to do something about it. They are paying more and more attention to their fundamentals, to their golf swing. And what you end up seeing is, the guys who are winning dont get any better. But the guys who are right behind them narrow the gap.
Morgan, who has one win, leads in the money race with $813,891. Fleishers win last week propelled him all the way into the second spot from sixth place with $740,455. Tom Purtzer dropped back into third with $648,415.
Morgan leads the way with seven top-10s in his nine starts. Fleisher and Purtzer each have six top-10s in their nine starts.
D.A. Weibring made the biggest jump last week, going from 17th to 11th with his tie for second in Alabama.
The tour plays this week at The Hills Country Club with a purse of $1.6 million hanging in the balance. The winner will receive $240,000.
Kite, whose home is in Austin, says this will be a real t est.
'It's a very, very good golf course,' he says. 'Without question, it's one of our harder golf courses.'
