April 7, 1992 ' Sam Snead has auto wreck en route to Augusta and eventually paid a reported $2 million to Roy Jeffers of Waynesboro, Ga. Lawsuits claimed that Snead was driving 60 mph in a 35 mph zone when he ran a stop sign.
April 10, 1975 ' Lee Elder becomes first African-American to play at the Masters. He shot 74-78 and missed the cut, but praised Augusta National for his warm reception. Elder won the 1974 Monsanto Open in a playoff over Peter Oosterhuis to qualify.
April 12, 1953 ' Ben Hogan wins the Masters in a year when he won three of four majors, finishing five shots ahead of Porky Oliver. The other majors he won were the U.S. Open and the British Open.
April 12, 1993 ' A landmark lawsuit by Ping against the PGA Tour was settled 1,228 days after it was filed. The suit revolved around Pings V-grooves and the tours promise not to tamper with them. Behind the scenes, the tour agreed to pay Ping owner Karsten Solheim millions of dollars in expenses.
