SANDWICH, England – Dustin Johnson was having one of those rounds where it looked like he was in jeopardy of shooting himself out of the Open Championship. Then, everything went right.
Johnson was 4 over after 13 holes but then played the next four holes in 5 under to vault up the leaderboard. He closed with a bogey and shot even-par 70. Johnson made birdie on Nos. 14 and 15, then made a hole-in-one on the par-3 163-yard 16th hole. He followed the ace with birdie on 17.
“Standing on 14 I wanted to make a few birdies and give myself a chance to get back in this thing,” Johnson said.
All is not great with Johnson despite the bounce-back round. He said he has a sore throat and infection for which he’s taking antibiotics.
“I’m going to go home and get some sleep,” he said.
