SANDWICH, England – Darren Clarke has been in contention here at the Open Championship all week. He takes the lead into the final round attempting to give Northern Ireland three of the last six major championships.
Clarke has putted well at times, drove the ball well at times and hit his irons well at times. But the one common theme all week has been food.
After an opening-round 69 Clarke said that he and his manager, Chubby Chandler, often joke about Clarke’s weight. Chandler, not a small man himself, tells Clarke that he plays better golf when he’s heavy. Clarke contends that he’s played well at all different weights and that there is no correlation between the two.
On the eve of the final round Clarke was asked what he’ll do to pass the time Saturday evening and Sunday morning before his tee time.
“I’ll probably stuff my face and go to bed about 10 and try not to drink too much,” Clarke joked. “Tomorrow morning I’ll probably get up and stuff my face again.”
