Since Stanley started growing his scruff just before the AT&T National he’s tied for 34th, second and opened with a first-round 68 at the Open Championship. Of course, the beard may not be the lone reason for Stanley’s mid-season surge.
Stanley, who finished runner-up at last week’s John Deere Classic to earn a spot at the Open, teamed with caddie Bobby Brown at Colonial following the bagman’s split with Dustin Johnson and it’s helped Stanley become more comfortable on Tour and focus on the parts of his game that need improvement – like his wedge game and putting.
“Bobby and I have a great game plan on the golf course,” said Stanley, who was edged for low-American honors by fellow bearded-convert Lucas Glover. “(Brown) has been 100 percent in control of my practice and what I work on.”
Glover was asked about Stanley’s beard following his round he couldn’t resist, “(Stanley’s) looks like a map of Hawaii.” Ouch.
