SAN MARTIN, Calif. – Golf offers fans an up-close-and-personal experience with players, and that’s not always a good thing.

Just ask Eric Steinhauer.

Ryo Ishikawa yanked his approach shot on the par-4 eighth in Sunday’s final round at the Open and hit Steinhauer in the head. The 69-year-old from Berkeley was treated by EMTs and insisted he was fine. He told medics it was a “glancing blow.” Open: Articles, videos and photos

If that was “glancing,” thank goodness he didn’t get caught flush. The ball sounded like it hit concrete and then ricocheted clear across the green into the right greenside bunker.

Ishikawa apologized to Steinhauer and gave him a ball. He then bogeyed the hole.
