SANDWICH, England – It’s flashback day at Royal St. George’s, with 1989 Open champion Mark Calcavecchia cruising at 2 under through 15 holes, a stroke behind Thomas Bjorn, who finished a stroke behind Ben Curtis in 2003 the last time the championship was played in Sandwich.

Bjorn, who in ’03 finished bogey-double bogey-bogey-par, is at 3 under through 12 holes as the morning wave seemed to have been spared the worst of Thursday’s unfavorable forecast.

Among this week’s favorites, only Luke Donald has worked his way onto the early leaderboard after a birdie at No. 3.
