DUBLIN, Ohio – Fred Couples planed to meet with potential Presidents Cup team members Wednesday afternoon at Muirfield Village a day after the U.S. captain said he would pick Tiger Woods to play on this year’s team if the former world No. 1 didn’t qualify.

The top 20 or so players off the current points list were invited to the meeting, including Nos. 13 Jonathan Byrd, 14 Ryan Palmer and 17 Steve Marino. “The plan is to just go and get my face in front of the younger guys,” said Couples, who added that about 30 potential team members will be fitted for uniforms this week. “I wanted Levi’s, but the commissioner said we can’t play in jeans.”

One potential team member who will not be at the meeting will be Woods, who is currently 20th on the points list. Couples told Golf Channel’s Todd Lewis that if Woods didn’t qualify for the matches later this year in Australia he would not hesitate to pick him.

“If he’s not ready to play he will tell you,” said Couples, who was paired with Woods the last time the matches were played in Australia in 1998. “He doesn’t have to prove a lot to any captain.”
