LEMONT, Ill. – Ernie Els made a strong move Saturday despite a stumble at the finish.
He made a move toward winning the BMW Championship, the FedEx Cup and PGA Tour Player of the Year honors.
They’re all in play after Els shot a 4-under-par 67, good for seventh place at the time he signed his scorecard. He closed with a bogey. Els was three shots off the lead when he left the course.
Els is seventh on the FedEx Cup points list. Anybody inside the top five in points going to the Tour Championship is guaranteed that he’ll win the FedEx Cup by winning the Tour Championship.
“I know what I’ve got to do,” Els said. “I’ve got to play better, which I’m starting to do.”
With the PGA Tour Player of the Year race wide open, Els would move into the frontrunner’s role winning the BMW Championship. It would be his third PGA Tour victory this year, which would be more than any other player.
