Fowlers giant first Ryder Cup task

NEWPORT, Wales – You wouldn’t think American rookie Rickie Fowler would have been selected to hit the opening tee shot as his first shot in the Ryder Cup in Saturday’s foursomes match, but he did in his pairing with veteran Jim Furyk.

Fowler betrayed no sign of nerves.

With thousands of noisy European fans jammed around that first tee, Fowler split the fairway with a perfect drive. He and Furyk face Europe’s most formidable tandem, Lee Westwood and Martin Kaymer, who took down Phil Mickelson and Dustin Johnson 3-and-2 in the opening fourballs.
