Retief Goosen underwent surgery last week to alleviate the back pain that has plagued the two-time major winner for much of the season.

The 43-year-old South African confirmed the surgery in a post on his website on Aug. 23, but did not say when he expects to return to the PGA Tour.

“I just wanted to update you on my back injury that has caused me a few problems recently,” he wrote. “I met with my spinal consultant again last week and we decided that the best treatment was for me to have back surgery this week. The operation has gone well and I will now stay in (the) hospital for a few days before recuperating at home.”

Goosen’s last event was the PGA Championship, where he tied for 48th. He had only two top-10 finishes on the PGA Tour this season, at the U.S. Open and Canadian Open.

“I am looking forward to returning to the Tour fully fit,” he wrote. “In the meantime, I plan to put my feet up, enjoy watching the golf on TV and relish the opportunity to spend more time with (wife) Tracy and my children.”
