HOLYWOOD, Northern Ireland – To say Holywood Golf Club wasn't prepared for the rash of interest following Rory McIlroy's U.S. Open victory would be a gross understatement.
Walk into the golf shop and there isn't much apparel hanging on the walls. Most of the good stuff was gobbled up within days of McIlroy's epic win. There are no golf balls with the Holywood logo. The general manager Paul Gray says the club normally sells about a dozen of the balls a year but has sold 40 dozen in the last three weeks. They urge those looking for 'bits' with the Holywood crest to order online.
But with that, there are plenty of positives. McIlroy's father, Gerry, said the club has received numerous letters that were only addressed to 'Rory McIlroy, U.S. Open champion, Holywood.'
