SAN FRANCISCO – Tiger Woods’ weekend free fall at the U.S. Open continued with his disappointing start Sunday at The Olympic Club.
Five shots off the lead at the first tee, Woods opened bogey, bogey and double bogey. With bogeys at the fifth and sixth holes, he plummeted from T-1 at weekend’s start to T-39.
Woods opened this year’s majors tying for 40th at the Masters, his worst 72-hole finish in a major as a pro.
A missed fairway at No. 1 Sunday at Olympic led to his first bogey. A mediocre greenside bunker shot led to his second bogey at No. 2. Two poor chips from deep greenside rough led to his double bogey at No. 3.
Woods’ worst score as a pro in a U.S. Open was 76 in the final round at Shinnecock Hills. His worst score in a major as a pro was the 81 he shot in the third round of the British Open at Carnoustie.
