I’m excited to be joining the cast of contributors to the Shag Bag blog! I come to Golf Channel from the PGA Tour where I produced and hosted several shows. Part of my weekly ritual was to preview the upcoming tournament and I’d like to continue that tradition here on GolfChannel.com.
While we are a day into the Farmers Insurance Open, Phil Mickelson remains the man of the moment as he makes his season debut. He’s captured his hometown title three times and has nine top-10s at Torrey Pines. Last year Lefty missed the cut in his season-opener at TPC Scottsdale and tied for 42nd in San Diego. But he has won four of his career season openers and when he kicked off his season at Torrey in 2008, he tied for sixth.
Nick Watney is defending this week and the 28-year-old Californian is one of only six Americans under 30 with multiple PGA Tour victories. Local products thrive in this event with 10 of the last 13 Farmers Insurance Open winners from Southern California.
The other player I’m keeping an eye on this week is Ernie Els, who is making his second start of 2010. It’s only Els’ second time teeing it up in the event. When he played in 2005, he tied for sixth. And he tied for 14th at the 2008 U.S. Open at Torrey Pines. I’m expecting big things from the Big Easy this year.
