Five years after he made the cut at the Sony Open as a fresh-faced 16-year-old, Tadd Fujikawa will again play the weekend at Waialae. Fujikawa shot 4-under 66 on Friday to trail leader Matt Every by five strokes, making the cut for the first time since 2009.

“I think it's just because it's in Hawaii, and I know a lot of people here,” said Fujikawa, who is playing on a sponsor exemption. “My family and my friends are following me and supporting me, so I think that's what helps me a lot.”

Three years ago, Fujikawa shot a third round of 62 to catapult into contention before fading on Sunday.

“Hopefully I can shoot another 62,” he said. “That would be great  But I just want to go out there and enjoy myself, kind of like I did today and yesterday, don't stress myself out over anything, just have fun, go play my game and see what happens.”

After celebrating his 21st birthday on Sunday, Fujikawa hopes to use this weekend as a chance to grow further in his sixth year as a professional.

“The more experience I get, the better I'm going to be at it,” he said.
