Rory McIlroy is running on fumes near the finish line of the European Tour season and says he has some sort of a virus.
The U.S. Open champion has been ill for the last several weeks, at a time when he needs a victory to have a shot at the Race to Dubai money title.
'You make it sounds as if I'm on my last leg,' McIlroy joked on Golf Channel’s “Morning Drive” on Tuesday. 'It's not so bad.
'My energy levels just haven't been 100 percent. Just got more tests done today and have to wait on the results. But I feel fine. Need to do all I can to catch Luke (Donald).'
McIlroy won the Hong Kong Open by two shots last weekend to get into position to catch Donald for the Order of Merit title. The Ulsterman has to win the Dubai World Championship and needs Donald to finish worse than ninth to take the title. McIlroy is the only player in the 60-man field who can catch Donald.
'For me, it's a bonus to come into this week with any kind of chance,' he said. 'Even if it doesn't happen, it's still been a great season.'
