Mickelsons driver key this week

SHEBOYGAN, Wis. – Phil Mickelson’s ability to hit fairways looms large at Whistling Straits this week.

Butch Harmon, his swing coach, has been paying extra attention to Mickelson’s driving. This is a long golf course that requires hitting lots of drivers.

“He has to drive the ball better than he did last week, which he did in Tuesday’s practice round,” Harmon said when asked what Mickelson must do to win the PGA Championship.“That is more or less it. He has to get where he drives the ball in the fairway more consistently.

“He’s been struggling a little bit with how he feels with his putting, but I think he’s straightened that out.”

Mickelson tied for 78th among 81 players in driving accuracy at last week’s WGC-Bridgestone. As a long hitter, Mickelson’s never been the straightest driver, but his revelation that he’s being treated for psoriatic arthritis has likely impacted his long game as much as any part of his game.
