Ernie Els will be teeing it up at Torrey Pines with a different caddie than he had at last week’s Volvo Golf Champions due to a freak accident.

Els long-time caddie Ricci Roberts competed in a pro-am for the Ernie Els & Fancourt Foundation and performed good enough to earn a prize. After collecting it, Roberts missed a step and tumbled down a flight of stairs about six feet in height.

'I called Ricci up on stage and he did a little speech but when he walked off he just kind of missed his first step and he went down,' Els said, according to Reuters.

Roberts broke his ankle and will be unable to caddie for two months. Els is competing at Torrey Pines with Dan Quinn on the bag, a former National Hockey League player the South African used in 2010.

Els said Quinn would see some action this season anyhow, just now much sooner than anticipated.

'So I've got Dan to caddie for me instead but they were going to share in any case. I think Ricci's going to be back with me probably by the middle of March.”
