Playoff cup not quite full

There will be some notable vacancies in the player’s parking lot this week at Ridgewood Country Club, most notably Sergio Garcia who dueled with Vijay Singh in a Sunday playoff the last time the postseason opener was held at the A.W. Tillinghast layout in 2008.

Garcia, 101st on the FedEx Cup points list, told reporters before the PGA Championship he planned to take an extended break after the season’s final major.

U.S. Ryder Cup captain Corey Pavin (No. 110) also passed on the first postseason event, as did Paul Goydos (No. 63), who withdrew on Monday following the death of his mother last week.

Maybe the biggest playoff miss, however, will be Arjun Atwal, who won last week’s Wyndham Championship but lost his Tour status earlier this summer.

Atwal’s manager Matt Judy with Blue Giraffe Sports said they are still piecing together the rest of Atwal’s schedule for 2010, but he is currently signed up to play all five Fall Series events.

Atwal, who was playing the Tour in 2010 on a minor medical exemption, hopes to play the Asia Pacific Classic Malaysia, a limited-field (40 players), Tour-sanctioned event that will be held in late October at the Mines Resort in Malaysia where he won the Malaysian Open in 2003 and 2008.

“He really wants to play that tournament,” Judy said.
