An 86-year-old man drowned last week after falling into a pond at a Hilton Head Island golf course.

Lawrence Monroe Slovin was attempting to retrieve his ball from a water hazard when he lost his footing and fell backward into the pond, according to a report in the Island Packet.

His golf partner reportedly told authorities that Slovin had only recently begun playing the game, and that health issues prevented him from bending down to try and grab the ball with his hand. Thus, he tried to use a club to push the ball toward him.

According to the police report, the man was unable to immediately locate Slovin because of the muddy water, and he was later pronounced dead on the scene.
