ORLANDO, Fla. – Solheim Cup captain Rosie Jones isn’t playing the LPGA Tour Championship, but she may be the most intimidating presence walking Grand Cypress this week.
Intimidating if you’re an American.
Jones is scouting U.S. players for the team she will lead against the Europe at Killeen Castle in Ireland Sept. 23-25 of next year. She remembers what it was like when the captain showed up to scout when she was playing.
“I don’t want the girls to be nervous when the captain shows up,” Jones said. “But . . .”
But she’ll learn something about how her plays react to Solheim Cup pressure when they do see her pop alongside the ropes. And they’ll be seeing a lot more of her next season, when points escalate by 50 percent. Jones expects she’ll be at five to seven events next year.
“I haven’t been out here the last few years, and it’s important for me to be in touch with the players,” she said.
