Golfs late-season schedule just became more crowded with news that the International Federation of PGA Tours will sanction a new event in South Africa starting in 2013.
The Tournament of Hope will be played Nov. 25 - Dec. 1 next season and feature a field with eligibility similar to that of the four World Golf Championships. However, the new tournament was not given WGC status.
Instead, the Tournament of Hope will be considered an official event on the European and presumably Sunshine tours and receive World Golf Ranking points. The tournament will attempt to raise awareness of HIV/AIDS prevention.
Scheduling became an issue last year when the Presidents Cup, which ended on Nov. 20 in Australia, forced some South Africans, including Ernie Els, to miss the Alfred Dunhill Championship.
Given the current schedule, the 2013 Tournament of Hope would be played the same week of Tiger Woods World Challenge event in Los Angeles, an unofficial tournament that also receives World Golf Ranking points.
