ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Alexis Thompson had to dig herself out of an early hole in her first Wegmans LPGA Championship appearance.

After pushing her tee shot right off a cart path and nearly into a creek, she tried to pitch back into play.

“I ended up pitching it into the water,” Thompson said. 'That woke me up.'

After a double-bogey start, Thompson, 16, played the rest of the round in even par, posting a 2-over-par 74.

Bobby Kreusler, Thompson’s agent, said he noticed Thompson perk up when she saw Nancy Lopez following her at the fifth hole.

“Nancy was cheering her and offering encouragement,” Kreusler said.

Thompson played for Lopez on the Junior Solheim Cup team. Thompson is playing this week on a sponsor’s exemption.

“I struggled with my tee shots,” Thompson said. “I hit a few bad ones that got me in trouble, but I had a couple good ricochets, too. The way I hit it, I couldn’t have done much better than 2 over.”
