“It is a precision golf course. I don’t believe the players today are precision players as a whole. They are more power and take advantage of the par 5s. They are great players, obviously, but somehow when they get on precise courses with a lot of rough, they say, ‘What is this?’” – Johnny Miller, on why players are struggling at Merion, site of the U.S. Open.
“I would describe the whole golf course as manipulated. It just enhances my disdain for the USGA and how it manipulates golf courses.” – Zach Johnson, on the USGA’s setup of Merion.
“Some people probably are hoping that Merion is going to get annihilated and say that they (USGA) have lost control. I think that they are going to be disappointed.” – David Fay, former USGA executive director on Merion.
“No.” – Tiger Woods, on being asked if he believed USGA executive director Mike Davis when he said that the USGA doesn’t “sit around and talk” about what it wants the winning score to be at the U.S. Open.
“Not at all. At the end of the day, there’s going to be a guy lifting the trophy at the end of the week. It doesn’t matter if he’s plus-5, minus-5, plus-16.” – Rory McIlroy, responding to the same question as Woods.
“Wherever he's around, we're living in a fishbowl. I didn't quite know what I was getting myself into. It's weird. But it's just something I have to deal with. He has his job, and I have mine. I just have to get used to it.” – Lindsey Vonn, to The New York Times, on her relationship with Woods, her boyfriend.
“Well, I did hit it. But (R&A chief executive) Peter Dawson (who was the rules official walking with Westwood’s group) has reassured me that for the Open Championship we'll be going back to flags like a normal tournament.” – Lee Westwood, after his ball bounced off the wicker basket atop the pin on the 12th hole in the first round and some 30 yards back into the fairway. He went on to double bogey the hole.
“I told him that this is the best setup I've ever seen for a U.S. Open.” – Phil Mickelson, on what he told Davis about Merion.
“Not when luck is required. I think Merion is a great golf course, if you let Merion be, but that is not the agenda.” – Johnson, again, when asked if Merion’s setup was fair.
“If that were to happen, Don McLean would write another song. It would be ‘The Day the USGA Died.’” – Fay, again, on the chances that the USGA would employ lift, clean and place at Merion after so much rain.
“I'm not an idiot. I try not to look, but I see what people say about me on Facebook. I see other things written. But I don't care. I learned a while ago from my divorce that my happiness is the most important thing. That's all I can control. And right now, I'm happy.” – Vonn, again, to The New York Times, on her relationship with Woods.
“I didn’t hear any of the golfers saying that. It was you guys saying that it was going to be scoreable. So you must be very good golfers.” – McIlroy, again, when asked why Merion isn’t being flooded with low scores.
